When the far back corner of your mouth throbs, the gum over a back molar puffs up, or your mouth won't open as wide as usual, a wisdom tooth is the usual suspect. Call (561) 372-2189 for a same-day visit in Westlake. We'll find out what that tooth is doing and whether it can be calmed down or needs to come out.
The $99 is a minimum fee for patients paying without insurance. It covers a limited, problem-focused emergency exam (ADA code D0140) and the X-ray needed to diagnose the tooth. Treatment is priced separately and quoted to you in writing before any work starts.

Signs you need wisdom tooth pain treatment today
Wisdom teeth are the last molars to arrive, usually in the late teens or twenties. Many don't have room. Call today if you notice:
- Aching or throbbing behind your last molar
- Red, puffy gum partly covering a back tooth
- Pain when you bite or chew on that side
- Stiffness when you open your mouth wide
- A bad taste or pus near the back of the mouth
- Swelling along the jawline or cheek
- Pain that radiates to your ear or the side of your head

That gum flap is a common trap. Food and bacteria collect underneath it and cause an infection called pericoronitis. It can come and go for months, then flare badly.
If swelling makes it hard to swallow, reaches your neck or comes with a high fever, go to an ER first. ER at Westlake is close by.
What happens at your same-day visit
Call first and we'll fit you in today. We don't accept walk-ins.
The dentist looks at the back of your mouth, checks the gum around the tooth and takes the X-ray needed to see the tooth's position and roots. Wisdom teeth can be fully in, half in, tilted toward the next tooth or stuck in the bone. Each behaves differently.
What we might do today:
- Clean out the area under an infected gum flap and flush it
- Prescribe medication when an infection has spread
- Treat decay on a wisdom tooth worth keeping
- Plan an emergency wisdom tooth extraction if the tooth keeps causing trouble or is damaging its neighbor
Some wisdom teeth can be removed the same day. Others are better taken out once swelling settles. The dentist will explain why, and you'll have the written price for each choice.

Frequently asked questions
Will a sore wisdom tooth settle down by itself?
The pain from an irritated gum flap sometimes settles in a few days. But if the tooth is trapped, tilted or decaying, the problem keeps returning, and each flare can be worse. An exam with an X-ray tells you whether the tooth can stay or should come out before the next flare.
How can I ease a sore wisdom tooth before my visit?
Swish warm salty water around the back of your mouth after every meal. A store-bought pain reliever used exactly as the package says may take the edge off, if your doctor allows it. A cold compress on the cheek eases swelling. Keep the area clean with a soft brush. Then call (561) 372-2189, because home care doesn't fix the cause.
Do all painful wisdom teeth need to be pulled?
No. A wisdom tooth that's fully in, easy to clean and lined up with your bite can sometimes stay. Teeth that are partly covered, tilted or decaying usually cause repeat problems. The dentist will show you the X-ray and explain the options.
Is jaw stiffness from a wisdom tooth serious?
It can be a sign that infection has reached the muscles around the jaw. Mild stiffness with a sore gum should be seen today. Stiffness with fever, swelling under the jaw or trouble swallowing needs urgent care, starting at the ER. See our abscess page for related signs.
